About KJ

K. James is an Austin based artist and painter. Their images, videos, and sculptures explore intimacy, consent, boundaries, and violence – all centered around the uncanny world of professional wrestling. The source photography for this work comes directly from James’s devoted participation in this imperfect but beloved world. Tightly cropped compositions of entangled bodies covered in sweat and spandex are simultaneously tender and rough. In these fraught embraces, their work considers the dynamic complexities and contradictions of consent. How consent requires vulnerability and trust – a risky, exposed place where so much is gruelingly earned and so easily lost. Their work freezes time and sits in these spaces of ambiguity, oscillation, and paradox, like mulling over a riddle.
